I have
A story,
A secret
Do you wish to know?
Do you desire me to tell?
Give me a wish
Not for me,
For you
What do you wish?
When you look up to the sky,
What do you wish?
When you’re living everyday life,
What do you wish?
When you desire a change,
Anyone, anything,
What do you wish?
Do you desire gold at your fingertips?
An incarnation of Midas?
Do you wish for an infinite cornucopia,
Never wanting for food or drink?
No?
How strange
Most would desire the first
Unless you do but you want more
Hmm
Do you wish for power?
Forever leaving your mark on the world,
Everyone around you affected by you?
The commander of the world,
Royalty on its throne
But you shake your head!
You do not wish for wealth,
For a never-ending cornucopia,
Or power?
You are different, a change
Whether you’re a welcome one,
That shall be determined
Well, then
What do you wish for?
Control over your worst enemy?
A hidden island?
An unstoppable poison?
For your desired one to fall in love with you?
Ah, you blink at that!
So you wish for your lover
An unrequited love?
How pitiful, how sad
Very well, I shall-
Yet you shake your head!
How strange, how peculiar
Tell me, then, strange creature
You have the world at your hands
What do you wish for?
(A space, of course, as the strange creature speaks)
What?
Of all things, you desire that?
What a fool
Why ask for that?
Why wish for that?
Very well, you stupid creature
I shall give you your wish
(Idiotic buffoon)
What I would wish for,
Out of anything and everything in the world,
Is
Nothing
I can see your shock, strange creature
And your outrage
You believe you have been tricked
I have not tricked you
And neither has anyone else
You have tricked yourself, strange creature
I gave you several chances
To take your dreams into reality
Yet you turned each one down
That was your own choice
And now you ask how
How can I want nothing?
Well, that is simple, strange creature
I am a giver of wishes
Which is more than I can say
For the rest of my kin
You see, strange creature
I was given life,
When others were not
And so every sweep of wind,
Every blow of breeze,
I embrace
Every scent, enticing or not,
I take in
With every sight I see, whether dark and gloomy
Or bright and full of light,
I am satisfied
You may look at me incredulously
After all, you take those simple pleasures for granted
But,
If you ever tried
To close your eyes
And just breathe,
You would understand
And now you look at me,
With something alike to pity
For I know nothing of fame or being rich
I know nothing of the thirst for knowledge
Of adventure and courage
And of lust and love
I know nothing of greed or pride
I know nothing
Nothing, but the simple pleasures in life
And that is enough
Enough for me
After all,
What more can a giver of wishes ask for,
When you’re a Wishing Well like me?
And so that is my story, my secret
I hope you enjoyed
And that you take my counsel to heart
For though I know nothing of
Those thousands upon thousands of books
And those fine goblets and cutlery
That delectable food that you eat without thinking
And though I know nothing
Of finery and finesse
Of riches and lovers
I know enough,
Far more than you
For I am a Wishing Well
And nothing will do
