Staying Safe Even if it Kills Me

LMTobin

My heart refuses to stay in her designed cavity
She floats out and prefers gliding on my tricep
But she’s there for all the world to see
I pump iron to increase my bicep
My tiny  heart looks big and strong
I am fooling everyone I meet
But the trickery doesn’t work  long
They see I’m really very weak
So
I take drastic actions
I fashion a shirt of barbed wire
The spikes give me satisfaction
Even if it makes my own pyre
My delicate heart is now forever safe
From the hateful cruel world
No, the shirt does not chafe
I can lie here, curled
Feeling pain only when I breathe

  • Comment from author about the poem: I am a sensitive person, even though I\\\'d much rather be tough and strong. I know when I try to cover who I am though , it just hurts me in the end. I might play more with this one in future.
