English

sorenbarrett

The English language is a confusing mess. It leaves my mind perturbed

When trying to spell I am distressed, its phonics are absurd

Of the 26 letters in its alphabet 19 can be silent

When trying to pronounce or spell you can bet, I get very violent

The same letters can make different sounds, different letters can make the same

In the same word different meaning abounds, it's enough to drive me insane

Multiple ways to spell the same word, two acceptable conjugations of the past tense

Singular but no plural who ever heard? Plural but no singular makes no sense

And to top it off, the more you interact in English, with English, the more it becomes a part of you! Thank you for sharing.

Cannot be more glad, given its almost universal use everywhere, that English is my native tongue. My heart goes out to all for whom it is a second language.
Despite that, let me tell ya that without spellchecker and the word processer embodied within my PC, I would be a useless illiterate slob.

Yea although my first language it was never my strength, especially grammar and spelling. The one thing its peculiarities did do was inspire an interest in etymology. Where did those insane spellings come from?

I'll throw in a little entertainment - this gent is light entertaining and interesting even if some of the issues you are already aware of:
