The House On The Corner

tclark090820

People whispered about the house on the corner.

Speculations of ghosts, goblins, and other horrors.

Painted dark gray with a red door and black trim.

It wasn't very inviting, some might call it grim.

What lay beyond the walls of this house?

A man, a child, pets, and his spouse.

She works, he's retired, their daughter goes to school.

During the summer you can hear them splashing in a pool.

Some scratch their heads and wonder how it could be,

That such an odd house would belong to such an average family.

They all seem so normal I can understand the confusion.

They work hard to blend in, creating this illusion.

The husband went to war, fought for his country.

He almost sacrificed everything so you could be free.

He came home to no thank you's but instead a system of abuse.

It didn't take him long to see past the ruse.

The system was fucked and people proved to be shitty.

To this man of honor and valor it all seemed such a pity.

Until he met her, the one who would become his wife.

She was unique, she was real, she cut through him like a knife.

For she too had weathered storms of her own

The world was cruel and let her tattered and torn.

Mentally ill by 12, meth addict by 14.

She was a sad and pathetic sight to be seen.

Always looking for rescue, she put her faith in toxic men.

It was a cycle she would repeat again and again.

Until one day she broke, becoming bitter and cold.

She all at once became distant, impossible to hold.

Devoted to her kids there was no room for men.

Until she met him and he taught her to feel again.

Even the child did her best to be anything but normal.

Combat boots over ribbons and bows, she detested anything formal.

She took after her mom, a true mini me.

Personality, looks, and mental illness unfortunately.

Depression and anger, daddy issues to boot.

All the other girls her age only had to worry if they looked cute.

The thing with mental illness is it make you feel all alone.

But her mom and her bonus dad worked hard to give her a supportive, loving home.

Even the animals were indeed a bit odd.

The family had 2 cats, a mouse, and 2 dogs.

For the occupants of the house were living the dream.

There were ups and downs, but they knew they were a team.

And if you are ever in need, their help they will freely give.

Just go to the house on the corner where the defective ones live.

I am in love with this poem. So well crafted and such an honest and true theme. Without wanting to sound patronising, well done.
