Dave continued swimming as was his ritual
on hot summer nights
and each time he neared her point of entry
he searched again and again.
He was beginning to question what was right
“Was the whole thing caused by his imagination.
Was there no blonde girl? No body on the beach?”
It was real, but something was not quite…
She had made him think of Marianne
a lover from many years in the past
who had died in a car crash.
He left the sea and in the moonlight
found his clothes, put them on
and headed for the parking lot.
It was nearly empty and neath the lights
he saw that his car was gone.
He grabbed his cell and called 911.
This was becoming an unbelievable night.
The police arrived in about 5 minutes.
When he described his vehicle
the police were stunned.
They had just come from a crash site
where a car, fitting that description, had gone
down the embankment and crashed into a tree.
The plate numbers were a match. It was his car alright.
At the scene the police had Dave identify the car.
It was traveling on the wrong side of the road
and several witnesses had said outright
that a blonde girl was driving
but she had fled the scene and could not be found.
The search for her would continue through the night.
The police asked Dave to come with them to the station.
Riding in the back of the cruiser
Dave wondered if he should be forthright
and tell them about, “The blonde girl."
