While A Dog Sits On A Pebbled Beach

Daniel McDonagh

A dog sits

On a pebbled beach

With lake water

As still as silence,

No clouds in sight

For the sky to embrace,

The sun a sphere

Of fire and flame.

A dragonfly’s path

Is the trail of its prey

The humming bees trading

The whiz of wasps,

The morning songbird

Sings from a maple branch

Squirrels run

And the squirrels dance.

Geese descend like floatplanes

On the water’s surface

Scattering beavers feasting

On sedges and cattails.

The urban sound of a city

Is hard to reach

While a dog sits in silence

On a pebbled beach.
