- Comment from author about the poem: The name Aliyah in Hebrew means to go up, to ascend. This is why I am publishing it for the first time today, in observance of Ascension Day, three days ago. The tragic passing of Aaliyah impacted me beyond reason. For years, at the back of my mind, I remained bewildered at the abrupt death of such a talent.. as well as such a beautiful person. For years... that is, until I faced a terribly unexpected ending, that regrettably, also proved unexpectedly terrible. And because of this, another side of my self, was allowed to go up, to ascend... my poetic side. This birth, of yet another iteration of spirit, enabled me to pen these words, this portrait of Aaliyah. Whatever tragedy you may have faced, or may come your way... from its ashes, I wish you all ascension.
