Expectations

Merlin

My expectations ran ahead of me

Uphill and across the sea,

It ran with long long legs

To places I couldn't reach,

And I think it flew (higher and higher)

Tied by a thousand and one balloons,

I wondered if it could touch the stars

Or kiss the moon,

I tried to shoot it down

With whatever I could throw,

But it's hard to knock it down

When all I have are sticks and stones,

And I think it flew higher than yesterday

Or a month before

And now I'm starting to dream

Of brand new starts

Of people I shouldn't meet

Across the ocean and right next to me,

I met a boy, pretty as can be

And I thought he was tens of thousands of things,

I thought he was kind

When he first said hello,

And that he was funny

When he told a joke, he heard from his buddy that smokes

I thought he was different

Until he proved he was the same,

I felt my expectations lower

A little bit that day

I wonder if one balloon popped

And my expectations lowered just a drop,

And again it happened to me

When I met a stranger I shouldn't meet,

One by one the balloons began to pop

Drop by drop

Until down they came

My expectations fell to earth that day.
