Grief for a probable future

Morwenna

We’d cool air, tall trees, the canopy scattering sun

On emerald moss; a woodland walk, that day’s delight

As an undertow of future grief flows on.

An enchanting place – but it may soon be gone,

Scorched or drowned, as politicians fight:

No cool air, tall trees, nor canopy scattering sun.

A happy day we’d had; and there are more to come,

But always aware of our earth’s climate plight.

So an undertow of future grief flows on.

The complex web of woodland’s finely spun

By beetles, lichens, leaves and birds in flight.

Thus, cool air, tall trees, a canopy scattering sun.

We’d fallen trunks of trees to rest upon,

While swirling clouds of insects caught the light,

And an undertow of future grief flowed on.

Has a juggernaut of mindless power now won?

With its self-regarding plans and blinkered sight?

As an undertow of future grief flows on

Through cool air, tall trees, the canopies scattering sun.

  • Fay Slimm.

Such a vital question asked in your final line of this descriptive warning but most enchanting poem - -- thankyou Morwenna for penning the value of unmolested nature.

It's easy to be despondent. But if we succeed in destroying the environment capable of supporting us it's a small comfort to know that the planet will recover. It's seen worse than us.

    • Morwenna

I don't think I am despondent. And yes, I completely agree that the planet has produced a cornucopia of life forms in spite of 6 mass extinctions. But I feel a future grief for this loved instance of the planet. This particular woodland, and other particular places that I love and which make me happy. Not so much for us, human beings, in general - though particular ones, yes. Thaks for your thoughtful comment.

"An undertow of future grief flows on," and does it ever. There is an undertow (maybe more like a Sunami) of money behind that flow. That's the problem and also why politicians prefer it that way. The rich get richer and tell us we must continue killing ourselves. We all need to wake up and take a stand. This is our planet, and we want to save it.
Your poem is full of truth and very well spoken. - Phil A.

Thank you. Yes we live in an age of rapacious oligarchs and power hungry politicians.
