Stay

Jason Jesko

So where do you go when you fail to show, when the lights dim, when the sounds slip

What voice in your head when you’re all alone and what does it say, I wish I could know

You run to the crowds and scream aloud, hiding right in the center as your heart winters

You reach for me and I give you a whirl, and then you run off, a nut and a squirrel

So I tempt you back, sweeter than honey, and you wonder then if I make enough money

We leave it a question, no barter or mention, as you show your worth and I can’t imagine

You run to your chair and play with your hair.  You open your book but don’t give it a look

You turn the page and in your heart rage, so you call to me and I offer a plea as we agree

Like it or not, you’d rather haunt, so you say you’re in as we both know you’re not

We play the game and you say we’ll see, and then you dream of what you’d do to me

You wake in the morning and put on your crown, you call in the evening to burn it all down

You send me a wink; I feel my heart sink.  You did what you want, and I feel the cost.

So where do you go when you fail to show, when the lights dim, when the sounds slip

What voice in your head keeps you at bay so scared to leap so frightened to stay?
