Growing up I know
I didn’t meet your expectations
And it played a part
In our father/son relation
I didn’t know what it meant
To respect you as I should’ve
And we didn’t share time
With each other like we could’ve
I was just a kid
Caught up in my own world
My attention derailed
By the smile of a pretty girl
By no fault of hers
You and I drifted apart
Guess I was too young to know
Having my dad was an essential part
We didn’t share a lot of common interests
But the Boston Red Sox were always there
I wish we went to more ballgames
A beginning for our lives to share
Looking back
I know more about you now
Much that I didn’t see while young
But lately my heart hears you so loud
Father’s Day
Every one now in my past
If only I could relive them
Everyday spent with you
Each one a prized gem
Just know I love and miss you
And don’t think I’m sad
I’m proud to be your Son
Happy Father’s Day Dad

- Comment from author about the poem: My dad was a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox Minor League teams in 1944 & 1947. He threw two shutout games, and both were no-hitters. He also had a 1.36 ERA (earned run average) which if you know baseball, is a very respectable ERA for a pitcher to have. Damn, I wish I could have taken him to a few Red Sox games before he passed. But at least he did get to see them win the World Series a few times.
