22.01.24 i do

lovebrigita

he asked if i had everything

i said, "i do"

with a strawberry smile

i waited desperately for him to tease

"ooooh did we just get married"

like the way elementary kids did

when the teacher was on the phone

but i watched him

watched him hit me with a "see ya"

and turn around

faster than a blink

because if he blinked

salt would engulf the bittersweet taste inside his mouth

  • Comment from author about the poem: i've always wanted to include the reference to elementary kids "ooooh"ing at the teacher's responses on the phone - almost seems like the peak of innocence to me.

I am always drawn to words
    that utilise, children's
    unique, perspectives
    to emphasise the distance between
    who we used to be
who we thought we would become
    and who we are..
    (a little like
    our ideal of love...
    we see, Spring
    till we see Winter
    the in-between seasons
    we're too stubborn: to heed..)
succinct poetry, with a lot of depth
    so much to unravel
    and consider
I really like your 'matter of fact' style
while still, utilising poetry's expressive artistry..
    thanks for sharing!
