A True Believer

peppino

I saw a man flogged by a gang

His only crime to be a stranger

I saw his fear and felt his pain

I wished to lend a helping hand

They said aloud: he is a heathen

They said he was an evil man

I saw their hatred, was terrified

And I believed they had not lied

I’m a believer

I don’t trust all I can see

I’m a believer

Reason has no hold on me

I saw a woman by men reviled

Although by men had been defiled

I thought about words in the Gospel

And in my heart for mercy I cried

They kept on yelling: she is a sinner

And to the law must pay her dues

I saw their wrath, was terrified

And I believed they had not lied

I’m a believe,

I don’t trust all I can see

I’m a believer

Reason has no hold on me

I saw a crowd of peaceful people

Protesting for justice for all

Sisters and brothers marching together

They sang songs of peace and love

They kept on shouting: what trouble makers

These idle people should be lock-up

I saw their hatred, was terrified

And I believed they had not lied

I’m a believer

I don’t trust all I can see

I’m a believer,

Reason has no hold on me

I heard the sound of a loud thunder

I saw lightening up in the sky

Inside my heart was full of fear

I tried to find places to hide

They said it was the angry Almighty

Wanting atonement for all our sins

I saw the fear deep in their eyes

And I believed they had not lied

I’m a believer

I don’t trust all I can see

I’m a believer

Reason has no hold on me
