The Girl With Good Fortune

Hyacinthe

You already know what people will say

“Beware the girl with good fortune if she walks your way.”

They think she was a witch, a girl who made a deal.

The type that will steal away any nice things you feel.

My family says we hate her though I’ve never known why.

We made sure for our safety she stayed inside.

Maybe it was curiosity that made me watch her at night,

Or it was the fact that I feared letting her out of my sight.

One cold day she snuck out of her house.

Without even comprehending what happened she was out.

I jumped out of my window and looked through the street.

Though I do fear not understanding what I meant to seek.

I ran away from home wondering where she went.

The girl couldn’t be out of my life without leaving a dent.

Nobody would care if she left

It would only be me with this pain in my chest.

Though time has past I looked back again,

On how I couldn’t stop the girl with good fortune.

Every person in town knew her face

Whatever name belonged to her, we couldn’t quite place.

I would watch outside my window wondering where she was.

Free on the air just like a dove.

Someone had to rest in her cage that would never open.

And that is why I became the girl with good fortune.
