A Broken Girl

 TW: A DEPRESSING POEM

I saw her out of the corner of my eye.

So fragile.

I can’t help but wonder who broke her

I hope she’ll be okay.

I think her smile would be bright and cheerful.

Almost as if she had read my mind, she offers a soft, upwards turn of her lips

However, I couldn’t call it a happy expression

It was a facade.

A fake.

An actor's attempt at conveying a genuine feeling that ended in failure

In fact, this sham only exaggerated the melancholy look in her brown eyes

The white wall behind her irises is swallowed by an unnatural shine of an unwelcome watery substance

Waiting for the slightest mishap to spill out

Cascading her pale cheeks in the warm salty fluid we call tears

I long to reach out to her

To comfort her with a soft placement of my lips on her forehead

To envelop her in my arms

A warm hug awaiting her hunched figure

But when I go to touch her face

My hand rests upon a cold hard surface

That’s when I remember I’m looking in a mirror

And that girl is me.
