The Lovers of Modena Disturbed

The Lovers of Modena Disturbed

When a scream was released

sixteen hundred

years ago, but heard only

yesterday ..

Their secret was out in seconds

even before

all the rumours got underway

and it spread

like a wildfire, unchecked far

and wide ..

Tho’ until a date, place and number

were all duly

assigned .. they were nothing

but history and

all their bones were taken away ..

 Had it not been

for a freak of an accident tho’

They might well

have laid there forever, in their

permanent

and loving embrace, frozen

in time ..

With a reason for their untimely

demise, both

conveniently and reverently denied ..

Sounds like more than one Italian secret was uncovered in those bones Nev.. ---- who knows -- but maybe liaisons between same sex was taboo back then and perhaps meant certain death - your words caught the mystery so well it has set me atingle with more curiosity ..................x

'With a reason for their untimely
      demise, both
      conveniently and reverently denied ..'
      reverently, as your word choice
      is the difference
between, a simple line and decadent subtlety..
such a lovely read, dear Poet supreme!
      and yes those fella's took
'forever and ever' to a new level of extreme.. lol
      funny how when Vesuvius erupted
it managed to preserve so many
people in their act of living
but not a single, couple embracing...
(am I strange for thinking like this
      and connecting the two?)
      lol
my bad, if it's in bad taste

I dont think you strange at all brother Mek on the contrary, I thank you for putting two & two together and arriving at a similar formulation as my bad self ...... Neville

Such emlightened times we live in. Or did we always until some man made religious hoo gah was concocted (probably to despose of a rival knowing the roman churches corrupt background).

        Love is love, period. Innit.

In my book yes, tis indeed .................. there are those however who for one reason or another fail to make that simple association ........... Neville

Would it be possible to cite context for this one Neville?

          • Neville

It would Dave, but I feel obliged to decline your invitation on the grounds that it might spoil the imaginings of anyone who may dare to follow you here 🙂

Oh well, I shall struggle on remorseless.......

              Deliciously written, Neville.
              You foxy devil.

............. I'm just a pussy really, but thank fox you saved me from myself and near obscurity Jez .. 🙂

Seems like you're describing when I first started singing. The shock of it psychologically brought delayed screams for as long as 1600 years! heehee.

You aint kidding, are ya ............................................................. N 🙂

                  • orchidee

Summat to do with repression, I think the psychological term is. it was so terrifying, it took that long before anyone could express a verbal scream - like that picture, The Scream.

Two people in one grave is unusual, today, but I can't say about the fifth century. Lovers buried together perhaps was a common thing, but to die together at the same moment raises questions of murder or assassination. Surely, they would have clung to one another if killed at the same time.
An interesting and quizzical piece. Why were they uprooted in the first place? Were they murdered? From what has been said, we'll never know. - Phil A.
