like i used to

scarlet poet

Your sunset eyes.
How smooth they were in the darkness,
How they shimmered like the skies,
And glowed in the light.

And your gentle hands.
The warmth between each finger,
So recent I held them,
But I wish the feeling could forever linger.

Your heartbeat,
Oh gosh your heartbeat is so sweet.
With nothing to replace it
But the memory.

Diamond necklaces,
And moonstone rings.
They serve as your reminder,
But still, I miss the little things.

The little things like
Running home to surprise me,
The second I walk through the door.
Getting on one knee on a casual hike.
Crying happily when I ask to play the Wii.
Random smiles when you listen to me
Angrily rant about my mom.
The little spiels about how much you love me,
When I do something so small.
A cheesy first kiss at the end of a slow dance.
The last sweet squeezes on my side.
Surprising me with the long drive,
Just to give me a hug before my stressful day.
Getting me flowers when I think you wouldn’t.
Carrying me when I panic.
Stopping to look at me when intimate.
Your romantic gesture when I said “yes”.
The immense support I could only get from you.
Your promise of an eternity,
Literally.

I miss loving you,
Like I used to.
I know it’s only temporary,
But it’s hard learning to live without you.

I know this journey is leaving mental scars,
But remember this darling,
No matter how far apart we are,
We’re still looking at the same stars.

  • Comment from author about the poem: missing someone, when temporary, can be traumatizing. Don't let it stop you from living, at least for forever.
