What is Love?

poetic_messagesbyem

What is love? Dare I ask

I was told it was a feeling that was

unmatched

A feeling that was masked

until it was too late.

What is love? Dare I ask

Is it happiness? Is it pain? Is it overrated?

Is it a feeling that I'm missing

or is it time being wasted?

What is love? Dare I ask

Does anyone have the answers?

I've only ever been in love twice

and in those two times I had to pay

a price

Now my desire for love has turned

into fright.

What is love? Dare I ask

Is it adjusting to time? Or is it passing along

with it?

Is it something that'll last forever?

Or something that could end any minute?

Perhaps love is passion?

...obsession?

Someone you can't live without

What is life if you haven't loved?

To me love is your greatest strength or

your deepest regret

Is that definition of love?

Dare I ask?

"What is love?"

The universal question

...and common misconception

What I thought was love...was only an

impression...an illusion

Love isn't manipulative or suffocation

...nor is it a feeling

It isn't an emotion but rather

a state of being

Love is indescribable

...it lacks definition

You can only determine

what love isn't

Love is infinite-it's what we need to

survive

Love is what you make me feel

Love is you and I

Love is us

To the question I once dared to ask

...that's the definition of love.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I've been hurt many times in my life. I thought love was staying through the hurt...that staying meant proving your love to your partner. You cannot teach not convince someone to love you. Being in love with a person who doesn't love you back is one of the greatest amounts of pain, it even worse when the person won't let you go. They just string you along, use you, you become the consolation prize, and you're never the first choice. That all changed when I met my Mj, he gave something that I could hold unto forever. He came into my life at a time when I questioned if love was even real and that I am forever grateful. I hope the readers like my poem. It is very personal to me. Thanks for reading. -Emily B
