I know what it's like to drown.
The weight of the world tied around your ankles as it's pulling you down.
Until there is no light. You can't breathe, you can't think, but still you fight.
Struggle to move upwards as the current keeps pulling you down,
Until the slightest glimmer of sunlight can't be found.
Your whole life flashes before your eyes. Memories of mistakes made, heartbreak and lies.
How did I get myself here you ask, a beautiful stranger, a devil in a mask.
A wonderful love gone up in flames. Fire turned to water just the same.
Then the smoke clears and there he lies, the most beautiful angel with big blue eyes.
Soon follows long side me deep in the cold seas. So tired of fighting, why me? Why me?
But I must for him, this can't be the end.
Then just as quickly, strong arms wrapped around us, a warm heart, love surrounds us.
We can breathe, air so sweet.
We stand on solid ground, sand beneath our feet.
A light above us shines so bright, darkness and sorrow out of sight.
The beauty of a butterfly fluttering away, the wonderful melody of a baby's laugh on an early morning day.
The passionate touch of a lover here to stay.
Everything's brighter, more fragrant, more clear.
So blessed and happy that he brought us here.
We feel the warmth of the sun against our skin.
I know what it's like to drown...
Never again.

- Comment from author about the poem: This poem is a small reflection of how I made it out of an abusive relationship and gained a beautiful son from it. It also reflects how my now husband swooped in and helped us heal and showed us so much love and helped us to gain our life back, and a much better life at that.
