The Future

I H E

The future, the past.
Which will win?

The past is strong,
the future, unsure.

I look around and see fading people
losing their minds.
Please, learn to be kind.

Once vital, sure and strong,
you feel tired, the day is long.

Wait until later, take a rest,
the future will appear
when you are at your best.

We remember the past,
it's what we have,
we forget short term,
we need to re-learn.

We're taken care of, the home is good,
help yourself, we all should.

I won't say goodbye,
I'll say "let's do more"!
That's one thing from me,
you can be sure.

Look to the future, never give up,
you are my destiny, my one true love.

I love you, now,
I'll see you when
all is rested, all is zen.

  • Comment from author about the poem: After moving into a home for the aging, being one of the few who still drives, and walks without assistance, my mother begins to have more compassion for the others (and herself) in the home who are advanced in their aging process.
