True. News was like an addictive elixir to my past days, Dave. But of late it hasn't been the same. Journalism is quite xanthine in the late 20th c to today. Or perhaps my mind is playing tricks on me as it has such a proclivity.
"Who holds sway" is the question more than many are asking here Dave - - - I like your choice of the word "grim" to describe news of continuous changes toward more disaster made in these hallowed isles right now.
Here in Oz a fair old proportion, if they haven't managed to disguise themselves, own up to being British or of British ancestry. All are clinging on hard to the underside of Earth while them as should be happy and stable right side up are, it would seem, falling apart at the seams.
How can this be, Fay? No need to answer that, as it may not be heard through the maelstrom of bad news pouring down upon us...

Hard to say, Orchi 'cos not only their upper lip, but the whole jaw apparently frozen, their teeth ground to stumps... It's obvious they've employed special agents to spread all these falsities around in order to destabilize the govt............................................................
we really are in desperate need of a general election .. I had no time at all for our last two PM's one being an utter lying narcissist & the most recent about as thick as a brick ..
Apart from that, all is well then? Britannia may not rule quite all the waves anymore - but Brits are quite happy to sit back, do their knitting...and enjoy their Morris dancing.... I should think....
Just another disaster before the real disaster starts work tomorrow.
Probably bomb some island we own to deflect attention away from the mayhem.

Years ago in Brazil they made an attempt to match each bad item on the news with a good one. However, now it all seems bad, I guess they ran out of good ideas.
I'd say they are pretty hard to come by right now.
And with that thought I'm off to bed - yep, really!
