Eh

PoeticKwill

Hello friend and welcome to Canukistan
home of the poutine, hockey sticks and caesars
you’ll find a lumberjack shirt clad bearded man
and a polite bunch of nice people pleasers

From Vancouver Island on to Newfoundland
the North Pole to an undefended border
endless kilometres of untamed hinterland
patrolled by red serge Mounty law and order

Tim Horton, Gordie Howe, mister Stompin’ Tom
here’s the Tragically Hip and Wayne Gretzky
terry cloth house coats, toques and the hockey mom
igloos, komatiks, kayaks and the teepee

The great Mackenzie River and frozen pucks
chuck wagons, oil sands, husky dogs and the likes
canoe trips, crokinole, cruising in mukluks
forty below, downhill skiing, mountain hikes

Where the Northern Lights versus the midnight sun
and you can snowshoe out to your log cabin
shoveling snow can be hours of endless fun
or own a nice wood toboggan to crash in

Polar bears don’t drink coke or play with the seals
but the mosquitos are the size of sparrows
the hockey fights can get you right in the feels
before you shoot the rapids and the narrows

Boreal forests, Rocky Mountains, prairies
puck bunnies, Captain Kirk and Alex Trebek
rowdy moose, mountain goats, out picking berries
and you can comb your hair just like Rene Levesque

With Pierre Elliot, Brian and Joe Who
down the line to Jean, Paul, Justin and Stephen
hunting geese, ducks and the mighty caribou
sweet maple syrup and saying, “not even”

Danny Gallivan, Bob Cole and Ken Dryden
team Canada, the Blue Jays and Joe Carter
and how differs the buffalo and bison?
furs, voyagers and the Hudson Bay barter

We do stand on guard, the true north strong and free
get smarty and bannock slapped hard without fail
have a double double ‘neath a maple tree
and drive your skidoo or dog team down the trail
