Sea Story

Tune: Melita

('Eternal Father, strong to save')

Psalm 107 v.21-29

*********

O that people would praise the Lord

For His goodness and for His word

And for His wonderful works known

They here to humankind are shown

Let people give thanks and rejoice

In joyful singing with one voice

They that in ships do go to sea

That where their trade and commerce be

They see the Lord's works, His wonders

In the deep, and when water stirs

For He commands, raises stormy

Winds, which lifts up the waves flurry

The waves mount up to the heaven

Then go down to the depths even

Those out at sea, their soul does melt

Because of their trouble so felt

They reel to and fro, and stagger

Like the drunken, scene does concur

They are at their wit's end, and their

Wisdom is gone. there none to share

They know not what to do, but they

Cry to the Lord in troubles, say

Lord, save us, and He does them bring

Out of their distresses, each thing

He makes the storm a calm, and so

The waves are still, the ysee and know

The Lord's working, and then they be

Glad, for sea is quiet, peacefully

So He brings them unto the place

Their desired haven, by His grace

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.8.8.8.8. format on a Remembrance theme. Erm, I can't sing it. It has to be 'joyful singing', not two cats fighting (verse 1). That leaves me out then! lol. It seems the Lord brings the storm, and also brings the calm. There is a Jewish way of thought, as in the Psalms, that says the Lord is the 'first cause' of everything.

I did a poem of the same title previously I think, but these are different words here.

Thanks so much for the hymn 'For those in peril on the sea', orchi.. .Of all the hymns I knew during my Sunday School years, before I faded away, this has stayed with me. Having just heard it again now, it still drags me in...
As a tribute, your piece covers it nicely.

Cooee Bella. lol. Thank you. Me being eccentric with a quaint 'cooeee' - when was I not? lol.

Eccentricity is the core of your wit and charm. What would we do without it?
