Icarus' Child

Leila Eleanor

I opened my wings and flourished them

Took a deep breath and made my way up the skies

I watched my wings and made sure

that I remain a distance away from the sun

But despite my efforts to have a fate different from Icarus

I only ended up watching as the trees get larger

As my feathers turn themselves to ash

And waiting for the moment I brutally crash

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this poem when everything I have ever known started falling apart. It was devastating because all my life I was following strict rules given to me by my elders. They said if I follow then I will not fail. Yet I still did, despite my caution. I was a kid then, and I believed that not being too close to the sun would save me. It did not.
