A Sugar Moon

eckardcb

We turn on the oven,
Whose timer has clocked
Countless hours of
Bread rising
(Sometimes falling)
Cakes expanding
Sweet aromas filling
The space we’ve shared
Here together

We gather
Flour, salt, eggs, sugar
Check.

The empty measuring cup
Waits patiently
To become full

Then at once,
Our cup overflows
And a sugary crescent
Gets left behind

A sugar moon,
You call it
(Also, the last full moon
Before spring)

And I know that
All our sugar moons will
Become scattered
Like memories
And get swept up, but as you
Come into your own
Springtime
I wish I could save this moon. Forever,
I want to remember
The sweetness of this season
With you
