Remember Who You Are

jayohess

Time spins and you don’t know who

Who YOU are

For do you choose

Or are you chosen

Connection blossoms

When the 2 way street

Greets green lights

paired

Autonomy frozen you’re chosen

The names you tattoo you choose

shared

existing as the petals you place around yourself

Breathing as the flower with lost petals drifting and found petals floating

Existing in the fragments of the petals

In the delicate and sensitive crevices

In the occasional dullness seeping into the former colorful petals

Yet beauty prevails

For beauty has chosen each time

You

To hope that choice is sincere

Is all you can carry

Because to know one takes two

And this is you

  • Comment from author about the poem: My father would tell me everyday before I left for school, "Remember who you are." Yet I never asked him what that meant. I can recall him emphasizing this statement when he knew I was going through a difficult time. I've reflected on this. Personally that phrase helps me remember that I am loved. That I can be held, carried, caught, and loved. We need someone else to help us remember who we are. I truly believe that.
