Raven

Joakim Bergen

Alas raven, my heart’s darling,

Whither thou taketh flight;

Far from my love’s bindings,

Into the crystalline night.

All my life I’ve been searching

For light in places of darkness deep,

And there, at once, I sacrificed

That which I wished to be.

Clasping thru the ashen forests,

Peeking thru every bush;

I wandered swamps of madness

Where the Sun fret to thread.

And then comst thou, dearest raven,

Thru the milky veil of dying fog;

I saw thy black-clad cloak,

Beautifully gallant, as my own.

Thus, whiteness gave way to darkness;

The fog dissolved in the sea of tar;

I lay silent midst strewn lilacs,

The world in my hand.
