Capturing Communion

orchidee

Tune: Mannheim

('Lead us heavenly Father, lead us')

*******

Here in silence, meditating

Sense of your presence you bring

To us, wait a while, what word will

You bring us when hearts are still?

And minds open, your influence

Renew them with wisdom hence

Though it not a voice audible

To human ears common all

Yet it your voice from within us

By your Spirit, true is this

We children of your family

You our heavenly Father be

Midst many voices may we hear

You above the clamour clear

What you say shall come to pass true

Your words be as morning dew

And as showers the earth water

They refresh it evermore

Closer to you we draw, and so

You draw closer to us, know

We, leave us not, but do remain

Cleanse us from every sin's stain

Onwards, upwards, daily growing

More Christ-like in every thing

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.7.8.7.8.7. format. Seeking to explore how God speaks to us. No, men in white coats won't come for us, if we say God spoke to us! It's rarely an audible voice as in human speech. The last verse brings in some thoughts of a previous Vicars' valedictory (farewell sermon), if a little based on his military padre-type background. But it wasn't in the style of: 'Onwards, old chaps, stiff upper lip; fall in line now, little old ladies of about age 80 included!'
