The Iron Walls of My Life: "Hey Untouchable," "Hey Gay," "Hey Black," "Hey Worker."

Dr.Suryaraju Mattimalla

The Iron Walls of My Life: "Hey Untouchable," "Hey Gay," "Hey Black," "Hey Worker."
“When I was a child,
My mother used to tell me
You careful with people
I did not understand.
Why did she say that?
She told me repeatedly.
Dogs, cats, crows are humane than humans
I did not understand her words.
She never stops cautioning me.
About humans
I never understood her words.
When I am still a child
My mother told me
Your father and I married
By breaking the iron walls of India
I still did not understand her words.
She never stops sharing her life experience
With me and with my older sister
We never understood her life story.
My mother never stops sharing her personal experiences
With people who constructed iron walls
But we never understand what iron walls mean.
But when we start attending school,
We are not allowed to sit with them.
That we never understand
We are five students sitting on the floor.
Thirty-five students were sitting on benches.
We asked my mother
Why we never allowed to sit on the bench?
When other students are sitting on the bench?
She told us they were iron walls.
That we did not understand what "iron wall" meant
Our school teachers are beating us severely.
But they never beat some students
Who have a priestly look?
That's what we asked my mother about that discrimination.
School punishments are so inhumane.
Students are so inhumane.
Classmates are so inhumane.
Teachers are so inhumane.
The public is so inhumane.
When I asked my mother about inhumane
She told us that iron walls are inhuman.
That we never understand
My sister never showed an interest in education.
It is due to our poverty.
She discontinued her fourth class.
I continued in my government school
I never stop learning.
I went to school, College, university
But like school teachers,
College teachers
University teachers are the same
Wherever I am going
Discrimination is following me.
Educational are places of hell
Schools, colleges, universities,
Knowledge centers are places of hell on earth.
Bullying, eve-teasing, humiliating, violating, and persecuting are my friends.
Everywhere, there are ideological state apparatuses.
Everywhere, religious apparatus
Everywhere cultural apparatues
Everywhere, conservative ideology
Everywhere purity, impurities
Untouchables are not exempt from this taboo.
When I attended Central University
I was harassed for being gay.
Hey gay is coming is my name
Gay is my name.
It was named by Ambedkar's followers.
Like Gandhi followers
like leftist followers
like feminist followers
Every ideology is a black skin, brown mask
Every skin is masked with white paint.
Persecution is omnipresent.
I am sub-humanized.
I am dehumanized.
I am persecuted.
I am victimized.
I am traumatized.
I am stressed and humiliated everywhere.
Humiliation is not new to me.
It is not new to my caste, race, gender, and class.
When I asked my mother
She said iron walls
I started understanding iron walls right from my schooling
But I don’t want to hurt my mother
so that I pretended to be innocent.
When I experienced that iron wall,
The iron wall is not new to me.
It is not new to my father.
It is not new to my sister.
But it is new to my mother.
She born in iron imposed space
We born in suffocated iron walls
Iron walls, iron walls
Everything is iron wall
Iron wall is determining our life and death
Iron wall of our life is caste
We are controlled by iron walls.
Every moment is a life and death
Untouchable has no choice
Untouchable has not life
Untouchable has no breath
Untouchables are things in their eyes.
I escaped my iron walls to snow nation
Iron walls are not leaving my black skin.
Iron walls are not leaving my son
Iron walls are not leaving my African wife.
The iron wall is so strong.
It is so strong, like that cast-iron wall.
Wherever we go, snow hates us.
Wherever we go, snow is stopping us.
Wherever we go, snow is blocking us.
My mother does not know her snow is hating us.
She used to say that snow nations are humane.
But she is wrong.
Snow nations are inhumane.
Just like my caste iron walls
Browns are inhumane.
just like their white
White and brown are inhumane.
Just like my caste lords
Iron walls are not leaving us
We are suffocating.
Iron walls are suffocating us.
Iron walls are inhumane forever
Iron walls are not leaving my black skin.
Even dogs, cats, animals in snow nation are hating my black skin”

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is my, my four-year-old son's, and my Ethiopian wife's personal experience with the inhuman caste system, untouchability, and racism in India and Europe. Black skin, white masks are so deep-rooted in Europe. Every state and non-state actor, including so-called global human rights organizations, discriminates against the black community in Europe. So-called human rights and LGBTQ organizations are entirely white, or Eurocentric, and brown-centric. These European-based human rights bodies are black-skinned, white-masked organizations, just like India-based human rights bodies. "India had never seen me as a fully human being because of my untouchable caste background, my black skin color, and my gay background." In front of every white man, woman, and child in Europe, I am untouchable, unshadowable, unseeable, and unapproachable, just like my social status in India.” Dr. Suryaraju Mattimalla (he/they), black, untouchable caste, laborer, founder of the Equality Religion.
