The Act

Shelby Hines

The curtain draws back

Spotlight on a king-sized bed

A broken man lay in solitude

Reliving every tear shed

He's grown weary of the act

The same scenes, day after day

Yeah, it's the role of a lifetime

A part he was born to play

Born in the land of pines

Five of five, son of an Airman's wife

It's a quickly written background

A simple, and ordinary life

An outcast, an odd young man

The walk was easier with his own

Sitting outside the favored crowd

That was how he was known

After years of starring as loner

A loving light as bright as the sun

Took our hero by surprise

Her beauty was equal to none

Good things don't last forever

That vision began to fade

Shaken by stolen innocence

And ended by loss of faith

With little will to carry on

Concealing pain by hiding away

With a heart as cold as stone

He admits to have lost his way

But he's grown weary of the act

The same scenes, day after day

It was the role of a lifetime

A part he was born to play

When mercy finds him

The curtain will close on an empty stage
