As You Lay Sleeping

Shelby Hines

As you lay sleeping
Five past four in the morning
Silence broken by the radio
From the alarm I'm ignoring

As you lay sleeping
The fireplace, like it should
Warms our castle halls
And smells of cherrywood

As you lay sleeping
I sit on the edge of our bed
Coffee is brewing downstairs
Dogs are waiting to be fed

As you lay sleeping
I do my best to be quiet
Setting two cups on the table
Your favorite one, if I can find it

As you lay sleeping
I light the grill, take out food
Sausage sizzling in the pan
Poached eggs, pancakes, too

As you lay sleeping
I rise from table to my feet
Step out the front door
And walk across the street

As you lay sleeping
A tear forms amid no sound
I stand in front of your name
And place a rose on the ground

As you lay sleeping...
