I had cracker jacks for my last supper
While the wife just sat there and cried
Looking at the long faces 'round the table
You'd think a family member had done died
Me and the wife were both laid off
And there won't be no more pay
They'll cut off the lights and gas tomorrow
And we ain't eat since yesterday
Ain't no groceries left in here
We may start catching and eating rats
Or maybe drinking each others blood
Like a bunch of vampire bats
Yeah, we make jokes about our situation
But it's us whose gonna pay
When they cut off the lights and gas tomorrow
And we ain't eat since yesterday
I wish it wasn't winter
I wish my feet weren't cold
Or if I had the money
To Florida we would go
Through the cracks in all the windows
I can feel an Artic breeze
It's bad enough when you can't eat
And now we're gonna freeze
My bed is where I stay warm
And that's where I intend to lay
When they cut off the lights and gas tomorrow
And we ain't eat since yesterday

I give your poem a like if it wasn't a sad reality.
(a Truth, of so many
inflations and great depressions
as our seasonal reality
nightmares, hold no fears for us
police sirens, as lullaby's...)
thanks for sharing, stay strong
Succinct neat poem about a situation which afflicts too many in so called civilized societies.
Well said.
