Let’s Not Forget Syria #2
When it hit
it hit without warning
and it hit
big time, so big in fact
all the bloody
clocks stopped
in nearby Lebanon ..
And at the last count
they say at least
eighteen thousand
innocent
souls were lost ..
Does anyone
anywhere know or care
or dare to think
just how many dreams
that cost ..
How much love
how much history
and how much hope
was brushed aside
in just over
57.00079 seconds ..
And all that before
the aftershocks kicked in ..

- Comment from author about the poem: I thought I posted these words in their entirety within two full days of the the original earthquake .. having received news from a very dear friend that over eighty individuals had already lost their lives in her village alone .. I just knew that Turkey would be flooded with support and rescuers likewise galvanised into action .. my fears about Syria though, were also sadly realised .. 🖤

A poignant write Neville.
Meanwhile - you spent that extra second we had one year? Or was it 0.00079 of a second?
I spent it by sailing round the world 3 million times, at more than the speed of light! lol. Otherwise I would have only got 186,000 miles in that second - the speed of light. Enough waffling, says Fido!
yes indeed, and as far as I am concerned an emotionally charged subject, if ever there was
Sidelined, I'm afraid, Nev.
All we know about Syria (or anywhere else for that matter) is via the media, and the caravan moves on....
It is too easy to read and forget, but what? Troubling.
Thank you for noticing Dave .. I drove through both the Lebanon & Syria a few years ago now and rarely have I met a people who had little more than nothing, to be more hospitable and welcoming .. Yes, side-lined or largely forgotten fits the bill I'm afraid ..
Was once that way right across that whole area. the hippie trail from London to India or on to Singapore was populated by (I'd like to say bums - but many had no political consciousness whatsoever) hipsters with little or no financial resources who relied on the culture of friendliness to strangers....
I agree in the comments before mine that if it's not in the news, it is largely forgotten. Thank you for bringing this to light and to give hopes and dreams to the faces and souls of all those who lost their lives in that horrible earthquake...C
thank you Christina & truly my friend .. 💙
A meaningful poem with deep regrets,
World must think it over deeply to help,
The poet is absolutely right in his feelings,
We must view all as humans and assist!
thank you kindly sir
When I read of the ongoing conflict in Syria, compounded by this devestating earthquake, I cannot begin to imagine the untold suffering and loss these people endure. Thank you dear friend for this compassionate and enlightening poem.
thank you Bella .. ever welcome, always appreciated ..
It is being reported here that the death toll had climbed to over 50,000 people between the two countries. A most sad situation, and your poem demonstrates the enormous power of Nature. - Phil A
I am sure those latest reports are likely to be conservative .. I scribbled this not long after the main event .. and in the firm belief the numbers would invariably and sadly increase .. cheers
'just how many dreams
that cost ..'
Nature, has a most callous way
of reminding us
just how precious, life truly is
(my thoughts go out to all
who've suffered
and the many that lost their lives)
a worthy write, Hyung
thank you!
and I .. by way of reflex do thank you my friend and more than merely, most sincerely
