Grandad's Shadow - Daisie-Lyn Fuller

Daisie-Lyn Fuller

May 17th 2014.

The day you joined heaven's team

And left my little world incomplete

Like a brick removed from the wall,

Still standing yet never the same.

Oh how I miss you

It's now 2022, and mum's getting married

You promised to walk her down the aisle

Now it's little Reilly giving her away instead

I think you'd like the guy she found,

He's called Graham, sorry, Gee, and is quite tall like you

He's old too, well, not that old,

But he certainly loves us just as much as you do

But now it's my wedding day,

And you're nowhere to be found,

Yet you're remembered by a small table, with your picture in a frame,

A chair left ready for you to sit alongside me

Grandad, if you can hear me,

There's always a shadow of you,

A glimpse I can hold onto,

I miss you.

  • Comment from author about the poem: My grandad passed when I was 8 years old, and he always called me his \\\"little princess\\\", and so I wrote about my perspective from being so young when he left and my family learning it\\\'s okay to make happy memories without him present and I know he\\\'s looking down at all of us and beaming with pride for the amazing people they\\\'ve become. \r\nThe two who are mentioned by name: Graham (Gee) is my new stepdad who joined our family in 2022 and Reilly is my younger brother
