Life for me is like a river
Always flowing seemingly forever
Until that one day when your feet touch the sand
And then you're out of the water and the river is no more
But for some they never knew it would be so soon
When the edge of the river becomes clear
When they try in desperation to swim back
When the water had never before seemed so fresh and clear
When all they wish is to drink a little more of the water
And then the edge is behind you
And as you fall slowly, slowly, down the waterfall
Was there anything more beautiful?
When each droplet becomes a crystal, precious and dear
And then before you're ever ready comes the-
Splash!
For some it seems a graceful dive, others a painful drenching
But for all it seems...never to be a drown
For they all rise up eventually, and when they come up
They are gently floating along
A river...
But is it a river?

The imagery of the river flowing forever until the moment one's feet touch the sand is a powerful reminder of the transience of life. The idea of some never knowing that their time to leave the river would come so soon is particularly poignant. The poet's use of language to describe the desperation of trying to swim back to the edge of the river and the beauty of the water droplets becoming precious and dear is both evocative and thought-provoking. The final question posed by the poet, "But is it a river?", leaves the reader with a sense of introspection about the nature of life and its journey. Overall, this is a deeply moving and well-written poem.
