A Simple Woman

charles69

She was just a simple woman
Who knew where she came from
Her life was mostly simple
Her work was hard, she had little time for fun
Some things made her happy
Some things made her cry
Another way of life
She never thought to try

She became divorced and lonesome
Bad luck in love was what she knew
Alcohol and  drugs ruined her men
It brought on grief, it brought on blues
She had a daughter who was pretty
She had a troubled boy
Both of them loved their mother
And they were her greatest source of joy

The years passed by
She found little peace or ease
She never gave up hoping
For a good man she could please
For awhile she found comfort
In the Bible and the Church
Sometimes she felt she had found
The refuge of her search

Then she found someone
A man with class and means
He seemed to think so much of her
It went beyond her hopes and dreams
But the he left her
He never got back in touch
For awhile she felt hopeless
Her life and labor seemed too much

She lost her daughter to suicide
Her boy got in trouble with the law
She lost her job at a factory
Where she operated saws
She tried to look for answers
Her life kept turning bad
Finally she got on welfare
A paycheck she no longer had

She knew not where to turn for help
Her walls were quickly closing in
She considered suicide herself
But she believed that a cardinal sin
She tried to hold her head up
In many ways she was brave
Finally her mind and body surrendered
Now she's resting in her grave
