Upon Learning to Fly

Neville

Upon Learning to Fly

She swore they

could fly

on their invisible

wings ..

Each held loosely

together

with pieces of string

and the odd

dab of glue

most strategically

placed here

and there ..

But as they rose

upward

he took note of

the fact ..

There was no

safety net erected

nor even

elsewise, attached ..

And so

there and then ..

He began to

visibly fret

and also out loud ..

Hey babe,

I’m not quite ready

to die yet, he cried ..

Well of course not

of that,

I have not a doubt ..

But are you

yet ready to live

though, she inquired ..

  • Fay Slimm.

Still smiling at your lateral views here on the meaning of free-flying. Life is adored when we get air-borne
    with a lover methinks.....x

I always fancied being a swift or a swallow .. the thought of making love on the wing still makes my primaries curl ... x

Agreed, Neville: safety should not always be the preeminent criterion for a good life... risk to be managed.
Enjoyed the metaphor - and if I enjoyed it, then for me it wasn't too obscure....

I do appreciate wot you just said, particularly the point you make about risk .. when I used work for the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health I would lecture all around the UK on the issue of clinical risk its assessment and subsequent management and of course positive risk taking ..

you are more batty than a fruit bat but if you jumped off a bridge and waved your arms you would either look like a flying squirrel or a stunted flying fox 🦇🐿️🐭🦇🐿️

Here's an opposite type of risk: I was part of the crew of a submarine repair ship. I went inro their radio room and saw all these coffee cans hanging from the overhead. I asked what their purpose was and was told, "To catch the leaks." Funny how your poem about flying at great risk brought back that memory. More important in your poem is the question on living. One must take a few risks in order to live a full life. Relationships too can depend on one's willingness to risk it all. - Phil A,

The poem's themes of risk-taking and fear of the unknown are relatable and universal. The speaker's hesitation in the face of something as uncertain and potentially dangerous as flying is something that many people can relate to when facing new challenges or taking risks in their lives.

(that thread of paradox in existence
              live boldly
              or survive, watching-on as other's
