girlhood is pink disney high heels
a dress that hugs non-existent curves
the male gaze at the age of eight
girlhood is a girl that learns
to shut her mouth and just look pretty
to watch the latest trends
that a girl who cries is pathetic
that a girl is just a means to an end
her lipstick should match her nipples
so when the man rips away her clothes
like she to her barbies at the age of eight
he understands and he knows
a beautiful girl is a girl who’s alive
a girl that is ugly is slain
girlhood is living and bleeding and death
girlhood is nothing but pain
girlhood is a funhouse of mirrors
distorted and ugly and small
girlhood is punching your mirrors out
but girlhood is nothing at all
girlhood is new look high heels
my prom dress shows all of my curves
all of the men will be watching
for i am a girl that has learned

- Comment from author about the poem: maybe some slightly mature themes here haha. turned off comments for this one because its a lot more personal. my experience of growing up a girl in the 2000s -> 2010s. not really interested in anything constructive here hence comments gone, this poem just kinda happened. enjoy :)
