like a pair of upturned dinghies:

 

pumped-out, dorsal fins like rudders,

steering empty through the water.

  • Comment from author about the poem: During Lockdown a pair of orcas entered into the lough by my house, confirming they were the last of a greater pod and suggesting a scarcity of food in the area, forcing these animals into new and fruitless waters.
