Dog In a Hot Car

Vera Podell

You are a dog
Trapped in a hot car
The owner's gone
He turned off all alarms
You're a boiling mess
Viscera and a bumping heart
You gonna die this way
He's way too far
Inside the car is empty
Except for you and heavy air
That you inhale
You hope its from his lungs
At least one thing you would have share
It's either nothing
Or you cannot see
Your skin is burning from inside
The heart is beating in your ears
Your core vibrating at the sound of his steps
He's coming back
You know it
At the end he always did
You feel yourself a dog
Though once you were a kid.

  • Comment from author about the poem: the main theme is an unhealthy attachment to someone (a parent or a partner or whoever) which descends a person to the level of a waiting dog i absolutely love dogs btw
