Poets Speak Out

Keith Jeffries

Poets Speak Out

In the heart of Mother Russia,

there beats the drums of dissent.

Intellectuals, artists, writers and poets,

speak out against the dictatorial regime.

These men and women are held in esteem,

but find themselves incarcerated indeed.

Free expression in the arts is supressed,

because the authorities seem to know best.

The canvas, pen and ink,

are not afraid to blink.

Free hearts and true spirits rise up

and declare that they will not shut up.

Heroes of courage, the soul of the nation,

create their reality of the situation.

As of old these noble men and women,

will use their skills to defeat this fascism.

  • Comment from author about the poem: At a time when autocrats are in the ascendancy it is important for those in the arts to be heard by all the people as they are the voices of truth and freedom.

Some can be........not sure all are......

    Like your style.

Thank you for your comment. I would generally agree with you but the work of artists and writers is available to all. Do they take the initiative? I think you are therefore right. They don't.

Going to persist with what sounds like an exercise in futility then?
