Tune: Richmond
('City of God, how broad and far')
1 Peter 2 v.4-8
*********
Come to the Lord, as to a stone
Living, His Lordship own
Disallowed by men, rejected
Chosen of God instead
You also, are as stones living
Being built in each thing
Into a spiritual house, too
Holy priesthood, e'en you
'Tis to offer up spiritual
Sacrifices from all
Acceptable to God by His
Son Jesus Christ, true this
As said in scripture, Behold, I
Lay in Sion, no lie
A chief corner stone, it chosen
Though rejected by men
But this same stone is made the head
Stone, Jesus rose from dead
And a stone of stumbling, rock to
Offend those who evil do
They that believe on Christ shall ne'er
Be put to shame, but e'er
Shall find Him precious, He that stone
Head, corner stone alone

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. format. If I'm correct, the corner-stone is self-explanatory. The head-stone or cap-stone is the central stone of an arch. The arch would fall down without it. Head-stone does not refer to grave-stone here. Christ is both the corner stone and the head/cap stone.
