Standing in line

sorenbarrett

Revving the engine without engaging the gear

Queasy, light headed, a vacuous stare

Palpitations screaming “doom lives here”

Magnetic levitation of my hair

A freezing response, a deja vu souvenir

Dwindling hope, tremor, anxiety, despair

An unsettled, sour gut, the taste of fear

A flash fuse, my spine does sparkle and flare

Exploding thoughts bounce then disappear

Unknown's vice, my chest does impair

A catch in the throat, an awaiting bier

On my toes in the gallows, the last gasp of air

A tightening of the noose, a frozen tear

Locked in time, awaiting a nightmare

    Brilliant!
    'Palpitations screaming “doom lives here”
    Magnetic levitation of my hair
A freezing response, a deja vu souvenir'
    (A moment's unchecked rage, spiralling
    to a consequence, stain
on our name, legacy, our very worth)
this is when, we need that mirror
    in our mind
to stare back at us and remind us
    we're all capable of mistakes
just like we can trip with every step
we take in life, what truly matters
what cements the legacy of that stain
    on our name
    is what we do, after
    “Why do we fall ?
    So that we can learn
    to pick ourselves up.”

Thank you dear friend for your most welcome review and gracious comments. Yes whether fear or rage the physiological reactions are much the same it is our interpretation and nature that make the difference. Yes reflection would be prudent if possible at such times.

when we need it most, first to betray
is that calmness of thought n logical
        decision making..
        that's why our archaic Amygdala
        is still so influential..
        flight or fight, that immediacy
        of choice..
        or frozen, paralysed by circumstance
our age of anxiety's, regressive evolution..

Another wonderful, thought provoking poem my friend. I find that at my late age of life I begin to understand so many things that eluded me in my youth. I used to be part of the insanity of humanity, but now I'm able to stand back and analize it, no longer feeling the need to passively accept, and conform because of fear or ignorance. Outstanding write dear poet!
