The Hwatus and The Cho Young-Nam Exhibition

Kinsley Lee

Having introduced from Japan, in the middle of Joseon dynasty,
Now, blooming and boasting of its popularity throughout the country.
Mocking the fool who only consider the art as the vanity,
The genius playfully toyed and ridiculed their foolish luxury.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Cho Young-nam who is one of the popular singer in Korea, he was also known to as a painting artist for drawing Hwatu. But he was indicted by the prosecution, in the crime of fraud. He bought a picture from unknown painter and with his signature and he sold that in very expensive price to the people. The people thought that they couldn't have discerning eyes and only tried to speculate the arts with the name of artist's fame. Without the discernment but the vanity, they only speculated and collected the paintings.
