I Picked Up The Picture       by Richard Martin    A 3/4               165

I picked up the picture that you threw away

One that we made dear on our wedding day

You looked so lovely, with a smile on your face

And you could see in my eye dear, no one could take your place

You said you didn’t love me, and you couldn’t stay

And that you’ve grown to hate me more every day

You took out the picture and threw it on the ground

You said you’d be happy, with the new love you found

I looked at the picture and at your smiling face

One so beautiful, that God must have graced

Still, a pain fills my heart as I remember the day

You took out the picture and threw it away

is a compelling and poignant piece that beautifully captures the tumultuous emotions of love lost. Martin's language is simple yet deeply evocative, masterfully conveying a narrative of heartache and longing. The imagery of the discarded wedding photo serves as a powerful metaphor for a cherished relationship that has been carelessly cast aside. The repetition of the action—picking up the picture—resonates with echoes of trying to pick up the pieces of a shattered relationship.

The emotion Martin has poured into this piece is palpable. Each verse is laced with a tangible sense of yearning, regret, and despair. The poet's effective use of direct speech brings the reader closer to the raw emotions, giving the poem an intimacy that's hard to look away from. Despite the melancholy theme, the poem is not without its beauty. In fact, it's through these shared human experiences of pain and loss that Martin's work truly shines, reminding us of the universal nature of love and heartbreak.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review, I get very few commits on my poems. I have written many poems and some are sad, but that's life. Thanks again, Richard
