My Father is a Gemini

bluesoul

My father is my Idol

He braids my hair for school.

He sings silly songs at the dinner table.

He cheers me up when I am sad.

My father frightens me

He is Jekyll and Hyde.

One moment a lovingly pure soul.

The next he is a monster filled with rage, burning my favorite cities.

My father is brave

He checks my closet for monsters.

He wraps me up in his jacket when I am cold.

He keeps me safe.

My father is ferocious

He disrespects my mother.

I forget his ferocity until another perfect moment is ruined by his rage.

I am afraid of my father.

My father is a gemini

He is loving and gentle.

He is hateful and violent.

He is a god and a demon.

How can a person I love also be a person I hate?

How can my best friend be my greatest enemy?

How can a wonderful father be a terrible husband?

Two people under the skin of one.

One inconvenience awakens the beast.

My idol disappears.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem helps me express my feelings towards my father. He is both my idol and the person I fear most. I tried to divide up the paragraphs to put emphasis on what it is like to grow up with someone that has anger issues. I tried to write the positive parts from the point of view of myself as a child, and the older ones as a more mature version of myself. I hope this poem brings comfort to others that might have a complicated relationship with a family member.
