The Lakes

JustMadison

Just on the drive, I feel more alive,

Knowing i’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

The pain aside, you fill me with pride,

Can’t keep the smile off my face.

The fire burns bright, there’s no reason to fight,

Momentary peace for just one night.

Forever driving away, wishing I’d stayed,

I’m more at home there then I’ve ever felt here.

I’ll keep you in my pocket, like a locket,

I’ll see your face when I check the time.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem is one of the first ones I ever wrote and it’s one of the only ones from the beginning that I actually don’t hate. It’s about feeling comfortable and loved with your people, in your place, and everything just makes sense. But of course it can’t stay that way. It’s called the lakes because all my best memories with my family are by the lake.
