THE POET AND THE WOMAN

She watches..hating and loving
For she believes in her way
That he passes her impossible tests
Her world tightly rolled, unreal.

Her mothers comments become law
Brothers are handsome or else
She possesses cruelty in a smile
His poetry rejects her ugly principles.

For he will not be her yes-man
And she loathes him for it
Her love too selfish to be true
She likes his art only if

It smells sweet and ignores truth
And is directed solely at her
For she dispises all vanity
That stands too close to her own.

Which allows truth to seep
Through a gap in her snobbery
Which pokes fun at her sort
The false respectability.

As he watches..he knows
She mixes emotion like drink
Hating and loving
A street poet.
