Red Bird - By Emily S. 08/04/2023

Emily_92

On a cool day, when the sun is shining, and the flowers are fresh in boom.

Right after the mere April Rain,

I get up and look out my window.

Sitting on the sill is a beautiful red cardinal staring into my home.

"Hi there, sweet bird." I mumble to that cardinal.
The cardinal remains still.

The cardinal stays there day after day.

Watching my every move with her big bright eyes.

Still as a statue in her birdlike form.

A few days pass and she diligently stands.

UNTIL:

One day, when I wake up,

The coolness is no more,

The heat blisters across the states.

and

the. . . .

cardinal. . .

is

.

.

.

GONE.

I can't help but wonder:

Cardinal Oh Cardinal where did you go?

Cardinal oh Cardinal where did you go?

Many more moments pass,

Then days,

Then months,

No cardinal.

Time continues to pass:

And the cardinal is not seen.

More and more moments pass by.

 The seasons change,

That sill is empty

Her spot bare

And I still wander with a blank stare.

Cardinal oh Cardinal where did you go?

Cardinal oh Cardinal Where did you go?

Where did you fly to dear cardinal?

Where did you go?

Cardinal, did you go back to heaven?

Are you finished with earth?

Cardinal oh Cardinal where did you go?

Is your business here done?

Oh cardinal,

My sill is still clear if you want to come there.

Cardinal oh cardinal where did you go?

Cardinal oh Cardinal where did you go?

I can't help but wonder if you entered the pearly gates.

So much time has passed by that must have been your fate.

As you dear cardinal watched down at your family and from those gates.

Cardinal do you ever ponder about

 Your family?

Cardinal, are they living a life in your honor?

Are they making you proud?

Sweet Cardinal,

They miss you more than you can probably see.

But don't be sad Cardinal.

Cardinal, your spirit will always be

With them dear cardinal, you will see.

some more time passes....

Seasons fade in and out.

The cardinal is still not there....

The coolness is close and

The freeze of winter is near...

Maybe,

The cardinal will soon appear.

Cardinal oh Cardinal, where did you go?

Cardinal oh Cardinal, where did you go?

Oh, sweet cardinal,

I want you to know:

It was hard for us to lose you when it was your time to go.

Life became hard.

And sweet cardinal I loved you so.

Your family is different now.

Sweet Cardinal.

It's not the same.

But we are trying to live contently in honor of your name.

One thing for sure is that we loved you so.

Cardinal sweet cardinal where did you go?

Cardinal Oh Cardinal we loved you so.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this poem because my grandmother passed away in 2020 of renal failure. I wrote a poem to read at her funeral and I decided to write this 3 years later. Since her passing the cardinal has been a huge reminder for me of her spirit and having her spirit in me and watching over me.
