The Preacher

The Preacher By Cat Rabin

He was pounding the strapfields and mounds for the mines
worked by some Pennsylvania town.
He fell sick for some time, couldn't hear
in one ear, so in wine all his sorrow
he drowned.
This was his life from the start of the day, these were the things he would do. To avoid
going broke and not paying his due, he
would sing for a penny or two.
With guitar in one arm and a pen in
the other, he would write down his thoughts
that came by. And be sure to include both his sisters and brothers to provoke all your thoughts with a rhyme
He got clean for some time without drinking his wine, bought a suit and would speak to a crowd. He found others that walked the same walk of despair, and bemoaning their troubles
out loud.
The life that this town shared was fading away and they felt it in all of thelr bones. They must grab their possessions waiting high in tne hills for the preacher to lead them all home.
Were there light shining out from the mines on the hills,
were there darkness and silence ahead
would they follow tne footsteps the preacher set down
would they turn back and wander
instead.
